Rethinking Dyeing and Wet-Processing with SALZWASSER – And How GOTS Makes a Difference

As Global Standard, we know that true sustainability depends on every step of the textile value chain. Dyeing is one of the most critical of these processing practices: it brings colours to fabric and makes our textiles vibrant to fit our personal style. But in conventional production it also causes some of the industry’s worst environmental damage. SALZWASSER, a German GOTS-certified brand, shows how this process can be transformed when responsibility guides every decision.

Conventional dyeing uses immense resources, up to 200 liters of water per kilogram of fabric sometimes, and often relies on dyes which can contain toxic chemicals, including heavy metals such as chromium or lead. In many production regions without proper wastewater treatment, these substances are released directly into rivers and seas. The consequences are severe and pressing: waters become discoloured, light is blocked, photosynthesis drops, oxygen levels fall and entire aquatic ecosystems are put at risk. Did you know that products self-labeled as “sustainable” can be dyed using such harmful methods?

From day one, SALZWASSER viewed sustainability holistically, not as a material choice alone. “We wanted a certification that covers every step and not just the raw material. That’s why we chose the GOTS label, as it covers the entire processing chain of textiles,” says founder Lennart Henze. Under GOTS, SALZWASSER’s dyeing partners must also meet our strict requirements: hazardous chemicals like heavy metals and formaldehyde are banned. On top, only tested, approved dyes are allowed! Water use is regulated, and advanced wastewater ensures that water is cleaned and recycled instead of polluting natural ecosystems. This often comes in the form of biological treatment with bacteria.

To ensure full compliance, SALZWASSER’s GOTS-certified textiles are regularly tested by the Bremer Umweltinstitut for substances such as formaldehyde and heavy metals, assuring their customers concerning the non-harmful nature of the clothing they buy at the same time. “The environmental impact of dyeing is enormous,” Henze explains. “That’s why environmentally sound dyeing according to GOTS standards is essential. This is where the true sustainability of a product is determined.”

For customers, this means certified organic cotton that is dyed in a way that protects both the environment, the workers on-site and the bodies of everyone involved – down to your own skin. SALZWASSER proves that vibrant colour, self-expression, lifestyle and genuine ecological & social responsibility can go hand in hand. And this starts exactly where the colours comes to life.
