Meet PILATEX: “Responsible luxury textiles begin with respect for the people who make them.”

In the highlands of Madagascar, where generations have passed down extraordinary textile skills through careful hands and patient practice, a remarkable story of a GOTS certified company is unfolding.
Behind some of the world’s most prestigious fashion, home décor and tableware brands stands a company many people have not heard of…yet! PILATEX. Within its workshops, more than 700 artisans – 80% of them women – create millions of textile accessories every year, transforming finest materials into products that carry the unmistakable mark of Malagasy craftsmanship.

Founded in 1992, PILATEX is more than a manufacturer. It is a true company of heritage, a driver of opportunity, and especially, a model for what responsible textile production can look like when people are placed at the heart of every decision.
Madagascar’s textile tradition is rooted in meticulous manual work and exceptional dexterity. At PILATEX, these traditions are not preserved in museums, but alive in every scarf, pouch, shawl or accessory produced within its workshops.
What makes the company unique is its ability to combine artisanal expertise with modern production capabilities. Hand-executed techniques work alongside specialised machinery, allowing PILATEX to serve global luxury brands without sacrificing quality, craftsmanship or human connection.

The company describes its philosophy simply: “Choosing to produce locally is not merely an industrial decision: it reflects our conviction that responsible textiles are built over time, by enhancing artisanal skills and creating economic and social value rooted in local communities.”
That conviction can be felt throughout the organisation.

When Work Creates Opportunity

For many of the women who work at PILATEX, employment means much more than a salary. It creates independence, stability and possibilities that extend far beyond the factory gates.
One of the company’s core values is:
“EMANCIPATION & EMPOWERMENT, our foundation. We strive to transform lives through dignified work and access to basic social services. Our craftswomen become the pride of their families, build economic independence, and open new horizons for future generations.”
These are not aspirations left on paper.
PILATEX supports approximately 3,000 people through healthcare programmes, covers 80% of hospitalisation costs, and helps fund educational opportunities for around 650 children and young people every year through scholarships, academic support and post-secondary guidance.

The company’s commitment go one step further though and become even palpable in their employees’ homes: Hundreds of families have received eco-friendly technologies such as improved cooking stoves and cleaner cooking solutions, helping reduce environmental impacts while making daily life easier.
The company has implemented solar power, recycling initiatives, river water recovery systems and carbon footprint analysis. It plants local species each year through community-based reforestation efforts and actively promotes sustainable practices among employees and their families. At the same time, strict attention is paid to traceability, chemical management and human rights protections throughout the production process.

These commitments led PILATEX to pursue certification under GOTS and this decision was a natural progression: “Our social and environmental commitments are fully aligned with the requirements of the GOTS standard.”
GOTS strengthened existing systems while introducing new mechanisms such as accessible reporting and suggestion boxes for artisans. It formalised processes that had long been part of the company’s culture and provided independent validation of its social and environmental commitments.

The benefits quickly became apparent: relationships with international clients strengthened. New business opportunities emerged. Internal systems became more robust and transparent.
But perhaps the most meaningful impact was one no one had fully anticipated.
As the company reflects: “Beyond technical and commercial aspects, GOTS has had an unexpected cultural effect within our company: a renewed sense of pride.” That pride resonates throughout the organisation.

Today, GOTS certification helps PILATEX communicate its values across continents. For luxury brands seeking verified sustainability credentials, certification provides assurance that products are made according to rigorous environmental and social criteria. For artisans in Madagascar, it provides recognition that their daily work meets internationally respected standards.
The company explains: “Working in an organisation audited against a globally recognised standard provides concrete proof that the gestures of everyday work — handling of inputs, hygiene, working conditions — meet international expectations.”
This is a powerful reminder that sustainability is ultimately about people. About recognising the value of skilled hands. About creating dignified livelihoods. About ensuring that traditional craftsmanship can thrive in a modern global economy.
