Organic, but make it bold!

“Fair Fashion? Sorry, but I’m more into colours and not just beige!”

Eco fashion is often associated with muted tones – like greens and soft browns – and minimalist, shapeless design. Yet responsibility does not require visual restraint. Berlin-based & GOTS-certified brand Blutsgeschwister proves that such fashion can be equally as vibrant, expressive and full of character. All without compromising on environmental and social standards.

Founded in 2001 by designer Karin and a collective of creative free spirits, Blutsgeschwister has always stood for unconventional, colorful, patterned and “everyday-wearable” clothing “that works independently of short-lived trends and is made to be worn with love.” Strong prints and bold colour palettes are essential to the brand’s DNA. Bringing the creative images in the designers’ heads and their aesthetic into alignment with strict environmental criteria, however, requires structure and precision.

This year, Blusteschwister turns 25 and their anniversary capsule pays tribute to the brand’s wild early days: rebellious, lovestruck and perfectly imperfect. Their team is bringing back some iconic styles of the early 2000s – the era of low-rise flared jeans, cheeky jersey cuts and playful prints that evoke childhood memories. The joy and anticipation are perfectly summed up by their team: “Back then we danced through endless nights and summer rain, full of life, friendship and the wild hope that the world would one day discover us – and later remember us: the Blutsgeschwister who brought color into the gray, seductive, playful and free.”

We all know that a GOTS certification is not about just having organic natural fibres, but it’s about the value chain and all people involved in the making of garments. It defines clear ecological and toxicological requirements for processing, including chemical inputs, wastewater treatment and residue limits. For brands working with intense colours and detailed prints, this creates a productive challenge: how to maintain design integrity within strict environmental parameters.

For Blutsgeschwister, the decision to become GOTS-certified in 2022 was a logical next step. After fully switching from conventional to organic cotton in 2019, the company wanted “not only to implement this step internally, but also to make it transparent and credible externally.” GOTS provides that assurance by guaranteeing certified organic goods and ensuring “seamless traceability along the entire supply chain.”

Importantly, the certification did not restrict creativity: it refined processes and showed that it is possible to shift conventional practices. “GOTS did not fundamentally change our existing sustainability standards, but it made them more precise and binding,” the company explains. In some cases, material compositions were adjusted to meet certifiable requirements “without compromising on our design and quality standards.” As a result, material management became more conscious and strategic.

This illustrates a broader point: sustainability is not an aesthetic category. It, in fact, is a production principle. GOTS creates a reliable framework that aligns bold design with verified environmental and social criteria. Or, as Blutsgeschwister puts it, the standard corresponds to their ambition “to think sustainability in a comprehensive way; ecologically as well as socially.”

Sustainable fashion is no longer just beige. With the right systems, expertise and commitment in place, it can be unapologetically colourful and responsibly produced.
