More Than a Tampon: How cosmea® Combines GOTS Certification with Consumer Education and Women’s Stories

Few products come as close to our bodies as period care products. Month after month, year after year, they accompany millions of people through everyday life, coming into contact with some of the most sensitive areas of the body. Yet while consumers increasingly ask questions about where their food comes from or how their clothes are made, far less attention is often paid to the origins of the products used during menstruation.

For GOTS-certified brand cosmea®, this has always been a question of trust.

For cosmea®, GOTS certification provides a way to communicate specific, independently assessed requirements for its certified organic cotton tampons. Produced by the Germany-based pelzGROUP, a third-generation family business with more than 75 years of experience in cotton and hygiene products, cosmea® achieved GOTS certification for its organic cotton tampons in 2019.

GOTS covers textile processing stages after raw fibre production, including first processing and manufacturing, as well as trading. The Standard includes environmental and social requirements applicable within its defined scope. Compliance with GOTS requirements is independently assessed and certified by accredited third-party Certification Bodies. For cosmea® however, its activities extend beyond product certification.

But what truly sets cosmea® apart is that its commitment extends beyond the product itself:

This commitment to supporting women extends beyond storytelling. Through its Wonderwomen platform, cosmea® regularly highlights inspiring women who are driving change in their communities, professions, and industries. One feature has put a spotlight on Susanne Diener, our Regional Representative in DACH at Global Standards, who has shared some valuable insights into Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS) – a rare but serious condition that remains widely misunderstood despite being closely associated with tampon use.

By creating space for conversations around women’s health, safety and informed product choices, cosmea® demonstrates that period care is about more than functionality. It is about empowering consumers with knowledge and encouraging open dialogue around topics that have too often been surrounded by silence or stigma.

This educational initiative sits alongside the brand’s use of GOTS certification. The two have different roles: GOTS certification assesses compliance with defined requirements within the scope of the Standard, while Wonderwomen provides a platform for information and personal stories.

Today, cosmea®’s certified products can be found not only in organic supermarkets but also in major drugstores and retailers across Germany. This widespread availability demonstrates that certified period care does not have to remain a niche choice. Instead, it can become an everyday option for consumers who want products that align with their values. The cosmea® story brings together product certification, consumer information and women’s voices. Through GOTS-certified products and initiatives such as Wonderwomen, the brand gives consumers information about its certified products while creating space for conversations about period care and the experiences of the women who use them.
